Waseda’s Saito tosses shutout

Yuki Saito pitched a shutout and also shone at the plate as Waseda Jitsugyo edged Komadai Tomakomai 1-0 in the final of the high school baseball tournament at the National Sports Festival on Wednesday.

Saito drove in the only run of the game when he singled to right with two outs and a runner on second in the fourth inning and scattered nine hits and struck out six, outpitching rival right-hander Masahiro Tanaka again in a rematch of the national championship final in late August at Koshien Stadium.

The game at Takasago stadium drew 7,200 spectators, who watched the future prospects pitch in their final competitive game appearances as high school players.

Saito has decided to play college baseball, while Tanaka was picked by the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in the first round of the amateur draft for high school players on Sept. 25.
