Gritty Stars top Canucks

DALLAS (AP) Brad Richards scored midway through the second period, Brenden Morrow added a third-period power-play goal, and the Dallas Stars defeated the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 despite a 45-save performance by Canucks rookie Cory Schneider on Friday.

Marty Turco stopped 32 shots to help Dallas snap Vancouver's winning streak at three games. Mason Raymond scored for the Canucks, who were making their second stop on a five-game trip.

"We got a lead tonight, which helped a little bit," Richards said. "That's nice, because no matter how many saves (Schneider) is making, the first one kind of relaxes the bench a little bit and we realized that we can score on him."

Schneider was outstanding in his first start and second appearance of the season. Andrew Raycroft, who started four straight in place of the injured Roberto Luongo (ribs), got a break after a 5-2 victory Thursday night in Minnesota.

"It's only my sixth start so this is part of the process," Schneider said. "I'll have some good ones and I'm sure a few bad ones along the way. This helps my confidence. I learned a lot tonight. You never know when you're going to get your next chance. You've got to make the most of it."

The Canucks were weary, playing their ninth game in 14 days and third in four, and they got off to a slow start before finding their legs for a 17-7 shots advantage in the third period.

Devils 2, Islanders 1

In Newark, N.J., Yann Danis made 23 saves and stopped four in-close attempts in the third period against his former Islanders teammates, helping New Jersey beat New York for its fourth straight win.

Brian Rolston scored the winner on a power play and defenseman Cory Murphy added his first goal as a Devil. New Jersey has won 10 of its last 12 games.

Frans Nielsen scored for New York, and Martin Biron made 29 saves. The Islanders have dropped two straight after winning four in a row.

The game marked the return of Patrik Elias to the Devils' lineup. He missed the first 13 coming back from hip and groin surgery.

Capitals 4, Panthers 1

In Sunrise, Fla., Jose Theodore stopped 28 shots, Brian Pothier had a goal and two assists and Washington — playing without injured star Alex Ovechkin for the second straight game — beat Florida to end a three-game losing streak.

Veteran Brendan Morrison scored twice and Tyler Sloan added a goal for the Capitals (9-3-4) in the opening game of a home-and-home series with the Panthers.

Nathan Horton scored for Florida.

Flyers 5, Sabres 2

In Buffalo, Daniel Carcillo scored twice and Ray Emery made 28 saves to lead Philadelphia to its fifth straight victory over the Sabres.

Chris Pronger had a goal and an assist, and James van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe also scored.

The Flyers (8-4-1) have won three straight by a combined score of 17-5.

Emery improved to 5-1-0 in his last six starts.

Maple Leafs 3, Hurricanes 2

In Raleigh, N.C., Jason Blake scored on a power play with 8:24 left, and Jonas Gustavsson made 34 saves in Toronto's second win in 14 games this season.

John Mitchell and Nikolai Kulemin also scored for the Maple Leafs. Toronto (2-7-5) has earned points in its last six games.

Brandon Sutter and Sergei Samsonov scored for Carolina. Last in the NHL at 2-10-3, the Hurricanes are winless in their last 11 games.

Avs 4, Blackhawks 3 (SO)

In Denver, Chris Stewart scored in the eighth round of the shootout, helping NHL-leading Colorado remain unbeaten at home with a triumph over Chicago.

Dustin Byfuglien had a chance to tie, but sent his slap shot just wide.

The two teams engaged in a nine-round shootout earlier this season.

Ryan O'Reilly scored twice for the Avalanche in regulation, while David Jones added a short-handed goal.
