A chartered Portuguese flight on Thursday became the first international departure from Sendai airport since it was damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The Hi Fly airline flight left for Malaga, Spain, with about 120 tourists aboard.

The next charter international flight from the airport will be a Swiss Edelweiss Air flight scheduled to leave for Zurich on Wednesday, an airport official said.

Sendai airport became available for nonregular domestic flights April 13.

All Nippon Airways Co. and Japan Airlines Corp. will resume regular domestic flights to and from the airport July 25, and regular international flights are expected to resume in October.

Power source equipment has yet to be revived at the airport terminal. “We want to fully restore the building by the end of September,” said Katsuhiko Ito, president of Sendai Airport Building Co.
