Mixed day for Kitajima

Olympic breaststroke champion Kosuke Kitajima had a mixed day at the short-course national championships Sunday as he won the 200 meters but finished second to Oleg Lisogor of Ukraine in the 50 meters.

Kitajima, who broke his own national record in taking the 100-meter title on Saturday, clocked a winning time of 2 minutes, 6.98 seconds at Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center but failed to meet expectations of another record-breaking performance.

Earlier, Kitajima had to settle for a runnerup finish 0.15 behind Lisogor, the 50-meter world record holder who won with a time of 27.21.

"The race was over before I moved into high gear in the 50 and my body did not move well in the 200," said Kitajima, winner of the 100- and 200-meter races at last summer's Athens Olympics.
