Yamaguchi breaks freestyle record

NAGAOKA, Niigata Pref. (Kyodo) Misaki Yamaguchi captured the title in the women's 100-meter freestyle on Saturday with a new Japanese record at the National Sports Festival in Niigata.

The 19-year-old Yamaguchi clocked a time of 54.43 seconds. The previous record was held by Haruka Ueda, who timed 54.88 at this summer's world championships in Rome.

In other action, Ryosuke Irie won the men's 100 backstroke in a meet-record 52.37, 0.13 slower than his national record pace. World gold medalist Junya Koga came second in 52.87.

In the women's 100 breaststroke, national record holder Satomi Suzuki emerged the winner in a meet-record 1:06.67.
