Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 Rangers strike late in winSUNRISE, Fla. (AP) The New York Rangers overcame another late tying goal to complete a Florida sweep.
Markus Naslund and Nikolai Zherdev scored in the shootout to give the Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers on Friday night. Henrik Lundqvist allowed Rostislav Olesz's goal in the tiebreaker, then stopped the final two attempts to improve to 5-1 in shootouts this season. Lundqvist has allowed only two goals in 17 shootout attempts this season. Lundqvist made 38 saves, and Zherdev, Dan Fritsche and Aaron Voros scored for New York. Radek Dvorak, Jay Bouwmeester and David Booth countered for Florida. On Wednesday night, the Tampa Bay Lightning tied the Rangers with 50 seconds left, but Lundqvist turned aside two shootout attempts in a 3-2 victory. New York won its third consecutive game, while Florida lost for the fifth time in seven games. "You find ways to win and this team has been able to do that this year," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "As much as nobody wants to give us a lot of credit for that, I will." Lundqvist rebounded after the late tying goal. "It was a good shot. He just roofed it on the backhand. It was a good move," Lundqvist said. "I was still mad for letting in the third one. When they tie it so late, you get a little upset." Craig Anderson stopped 43 shots for Florida. He's 0-2 in shootouts this season. "That's about as hard as we can play," Panthers coach Peter DeBoer said. "If you looked at the lineups on paper, we probably didn't have any business being on the ice with them. Our guys, through guts and will, found a way to compete tonight." Booth tied it at 3 with 1:33 left in the third. Florida had a 2-on-1 and Booth took a pass from Dvorak and got off a shot that went between Lundqvist's shoulder and the left post. Booth extended his goal streak to four games. It was the second time in as many games that Booth came through late with a tying goal. "A point is better than no point but we can't settle for making one play every night, we have to make two," Booth said. Hurricanes 3, Flyers 2 (OT) In Philadelphia, Sergei Samsonov scored with 1:07 left in overtime as Carolina edged the Flyers to end Philadelphia's six-game winning streak. Samsonov put a forehand past goaltender Martin Biron's glove side as the Hurricanes ended their three-game slide. The Flyers, who won seven of their previous eight, were denied their longest winning streak since they won eight straight in 1999-2000. Sharks 6, Stars 2 In Dallas, Dan Boyle scored two goals, Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves and NHL-leading San Jose won its sixth straight to improve to 19-3-1. Capitals 3, Canadiens 0 In Washington, Jose Theodore made 28 saves for his first shutout with the Capitals, and Alex Ovechkin, Tomas Fleischmann and David Steckel scored goals. Sabres 4, Penguins 3 In Buffalo, Paul Gaustad broke a tie with his second goal, and Drew Stafford had two goals and an assist in the Sabres' comeback victory. Sidney Crosby scored twice, and Tyler Kennedy added a goal for Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin had two assists to boost his NHL-leading points total to 37, and rookie John Curry made 28 saves in his first NHL start. Red Wings 5, Blue Jackets 3 In Detroit, Marian Hossa scored his second goal of the game with 2 minutes left, and Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings. Predators 4, Thrashers 3 (OT) In Atlanta, Ryan Suter beat Johan Hedberg on a breakaway 1:44 into overtime to give Nashville its first win here since December 1999. Wild 4, Lightning 2 In St. Paul, Minn., Marc-Andre Bergeron assisted on a pair of goals early in the third period for the hosts. Coyotes 2, Avalanche 1 In Glendale, Ariz., Mikael Tellqvist stopped 37 shots in his second consecutive start for Phoenix. Ducks 1, Blackhawks 0 In Anaheim, Jonas Hiller made 26 saves and Ryan Getzlaf scored for the Ducks. Getzlaf sent a backhand past Cristobal Huet with 4:41 to play in the second and Hiller made six saves in the third to secure Anaheim's third consecutive win and his second career shutout. Bruins 7, Islanders 2 In Boston, Blake Wheeler and David Krejci set up each other for scores 10 seconds apart in the Bruins' five-goal third period, helping Boston to its 10th win in 12 games. |
