READERS IN COUNCIL

Raise prices on tobacco products

By ANDRE COLOMAS
Zushi, Kanagawa

I fully support increasing the price of tobacco products even if it is unlikely to stop people from smoking. I also support placing greater restrictions on public smoking.

I used to smoke a long time ago so I understand that some people like to smoke and that, in many cases, it helps them reduce stress. But I also believe that no one's personal likings should be someone else's burden. Implementing smoking spaces in public areas such as bars, restaurants, hotels, libraries and hospitals will help.

Most importantly, however, I think that the revenues generated by the price increase should be used solely to help cover the cost of medical care provided to smokers suffering from various tobacco induced diseases. This will greatly ease the burden placed on nonsmoking taxpayers.
