Comic Kitano set to repel barbs over Christmas-themed plate

Filmmaker Takeshi Kitano unveiled his design Wednesday for a novelty plate to go on sale for the Christmas season in Tokyo's Ginza district.

Kitano did not seem too confident about the quality of his creation.

"I accepted the offer to draw one without hesitation, but later I found out that plenty of more qualified artists who represent Japan have been involved" in the annual event, he said. "But I can dodge any complaints by saying, 'Sorry, I'm a comedian,' " Kitano said.

Kitano has painted many pictures placed in his own films.
