Ex-Carp manager Mimura dies at 61

Former Hiroshima Carp manager and senior Rakuten Eagles official Toshiyuki Mimura died Tuesday at a Sendai hospital, Rakuten said. He was 61.

Mimura played for 17 years. He managed the Carp for five years starting in 1994. He joined the Carp in 1967 and made the league's "Best Nine" all-star team three times with his solid play at shortstop. He played in 1,567 regular season games and had a .255 life-time batting average. He hit 149 homers.

The cause of death was not immediately reported.
