Two die in nursing home blaze

FUKUSHIMA (Kyodo) Two elderly women died in a fire at a senior care home in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, while three other women were injured, police said.

Toshie Hisano, 88, and Taki Mizutani, 90, died of carbon monoxide poisoning after the fire broke out at around 10 p.m. Friday, the police said. The three injured are also in their 80s and 90s.

Eight elderly people were at the facility at the time of the fire, together with staff. The five who died or were injured were on the second floor.

Three other elderly persons and the staff managed to get out safely, the police said.
