As of 6 p.m., Faxai, the season's 20th typhoon, was about 90 km south-southeast of Katsuura, Chiba Prefecture, and moving northeast at 75 kph in the Pacific. It was generating winds of up to 144 kph and had an atmospheric pressure of 980 hectopascals near its center.

The typhoon is expected to veer away from Tokyo Sunday without making landfall in the Kanto region.

In Kanagawa Prefecture, three surfers were swallowed by waves on Saturday, police said. Two were surfing off Hiratsuka, where one was rescued and one is missing. The third one disappeared somewhere off Kamakura.

In Mitaka, western Tokyo, a woman sustained light injuries when she was hit by a tree while walking through Inokashira Park.

Miyake Island, meanwhile, received 103 mm of rain in one hour, helping set a 24-hour record of 430 mm for the Izu Island area by Saturday evening, the Meteorological Agency said.

Winds were stronger at sea than on land. Hachijo Island, another island in the Izu chain, saw winds of up to 153 kph, compared with about 96 kph in Yokohama and 93 kph in central Tokyo, the agency said.
