Appliance shipments up in first half

Domestic shipments of home appliances came to ¥1.12 trillion in the April-September half, up 4.9 percent from a year earlier and up for the third consecutive half, thanks in part to robust air conditioner sales, an industry group said Friday.

In the second half through March, however, the figure is expected to dip as personal spending declines amid the deepening economic gloom, the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association said.
